I want to start by saying a huge well done to all our students this week. Despite the obvious challenges posed by the heat, they have been sensible, mature and good humoured through these very warm days. Numerous staff have commented on how brilliant the students have been this week, so please pass on our appreciation and thanks. We will make sure we way well done and thank you to them in Morning Welcome next week. As temperatures will return to a more ‘normal’ summer temperature next week, we will expect students back to normal uniform pattern; only wearing PE kit if they have a PE lesson that day.

I’d also like to say thank you to parents who I’m sure have been washing PE kits every day (certainly has been the case in my house) and ensuring students are well equipped in this heat wave. I hope you are all able to have a restful and cool weekend.

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, we will be moving to a single lunch as a pilot from July to October. This will start on Monday 6th July, where we will retain our usual school day timings throughout the day, but will have all students go to Tutor Reading at 12midday, and have lunch at 12.25pm. All students will be informed of these changes throughout the week, next week. In September, we plan to alter the timings a little to have reading and only one lesson after the lunch break. The start and end of the day will remain the same.

Finally this week, I would like to share a video with families that has been sent to us by the Police, from a team who delivers training around police responses to incidents in water. Sargeant Bramley, who has been in contact with us, has links to St Ives and St Ivo, and therefore is keenly aware of how many local young people will be tempted to go swimming in the river and local waterways, especially in this heat. The police have recently created a video alongside Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service about the risks posed by water. It is quite hard hitting, so I’m sharing it here with the warning that may find aspects of it upsetting, but please share it with your children to remind them of the risks involved in swimming in the river. Because we know that these risks are very real for our young people, we have invited the Fire Service in each day next week to deliver assemblies to all students on this topic.

Work Experience Placements Needed – Year 12 Students

We are currently seeking work experience placements for our Year 12 students during the week commencing 6 July.

In particular, we are looking for opportunities in:

  • Law
  • Healthcare
  • Finance

Placements do not need to cover the full week – even 2–3 days would provide valuable insight and experience for our students.

If you or your organisation could offer a placement, or if you know of a suitable contact, we would love to hear from you. Your support can make a real difference in helping young people explore future career pathways and develop workplace skills.

Thank you for your support – please email Helen.parks@astreastivo.org

Year 10 Geography – Hunstanton

Our year 10 students were faced with lots of different weather from their trips over the past two weeks with today’s group being soaked with some unexpected rain at the coast to sweating all in 15 minutes! We are very proud of the students for taking it in their stride and getting on with the task!
