A-Level Graphic Communication

A-Level Graphic Communication (Edexcel 9GCO)

Course Overview

The course aims to develop skills in:

  • formal graphic communication techniques
  • creative, innovative and experimental practice
  • developing ideas from concept to finished product
  • investigation, analysis and critical judgement, knowledge and understanding of both contemporary and historical graphic design and the contexts within which they operate.

Careers in graphic design, advertising, product design, technical illustration, print, packaging, interior design and architecture, among many other creative industries.

Component 1 – Personal Investigation, 60% of final grade

Students develop a personal project, researching sources, experimenting with media and refining their ideas to create a resolved outcome. This is supported by 1,000–3,000 words of continuous prose.

Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment, 40% of final grade

Students respond to an externally set theme, developing and refining their ideas before producing a final outcome during 15 hours of unaided supervised time.

Students will need to purchase a range of art equipment and materials for use at home.

“This course develops the creative, technical and problem-solving skills that are highly valued by universities and employers. I like it because it gives you the freedom to turn your ideas into something real, while learning skills that can open the door to so many exciting careers.”
